Belly Binding

Belly Binding, known in its traditional Malaysian form as “Bengkung,” is a simple yet highly effective practice to support and close the body—both physically and emotionally—after birth, helping to gently “close” and complete the journey of pregnancy (which is considered to extend into the fourth trimester).

A long cloth, typically between 14 and 17 meters, is wrapped around the abdomen—including the hips and lower ribcage—using a specific technique. It can be combined with a traditional closing ceremony and the application of warming oils infused with Ayurvedic spices, this practice becomes a deeply nurturing ritual. It honors the womb and pelvic space, while offering the new mother a moment of rest, care, and reconnection—beautifully integrated into the postpartum period.

After receiving the treatment, the practice is ideally continued by the woman herself for at least 30 days. This consistent, daily ritual allows the body to gently restore and reorganize, supporting the organs and muscles in returning to their natural place and preparing the body for postpartum recovery.

Belly binding can also be practiced beyond the postpartum period. It can be especially supportive during ovulation and menstruation, helping to ease cramps and discomfort.
